The Origin of SARS-CoV-2 virus Traced Back To Bats In A Cave In Laos

Scientists have discovered that bats in a limestone cave in northern Laos carry a corona virus with key characteristics similar to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, bringing them closer to finding the origin of Covid- 19.

Bloomberg reported on September 18 that researchers at the French Pasteur Institute and the University of Laos found in bats three types of corona virus with a receptor-binding domain similar to SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The receptor-binding domain is the part of the spike protein that helps the virus interact with the human enzyme ACE2 and cause disease.

The findings are outlined in a research paper published September 17 and being reviewed for publication in the journal Nature . According to the study, viruses closely related to SARS-CoV-2 still exist in nature in many species of leaf-nosed bats.

The study supports the hypothesis that the Covid-19 pandemic originated with a virus in bats. A study published on September 14 also found that about 1,000 people in southern China and Southeast Asia, densely populated areas with bats, are infected from bats every day.

The three coronaviruses that have just been found in Laos are called BNAL-52, BNAL-103 and BNAL-236. This is “the closest ancestor of SARS-CoV-2 that has been found to date,” said Marc Eloit, head of pathogen detection at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and a study co-author.

“These viruses may have contributed to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and may in essence pose a risk of direct human-to-human transmission in the future.”

Eloit added.

The receptor-binding domains of the three novel coronaviruses found in Laos are more similar to the receptor-binding domains of SARS-CoV-2 than to the RaTG13 virus. According to the study, the BNAL-236 virus has a receptor-binding domain that is almost identical to that of SARS-CoV-2.

RaTG13 was identified in leaf-tailed bats in Mojiang district of Yunnan province (China) and is considered the closest strain to the virus causing the Covid-19 pandemic.

Edward Holmes, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Sydney who was not involved in the study, said that when it was first discovered, the receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 did not look normal because there were so few similar viruses after comparison.

“Now, we are taking more samples from the wild. From that, we have found viruses with closely related genetic sequences,”

added Holmes,

adding that scientists will find the ancestor of the entire genome of SARS-CoV-2 after many times.

Ronaldo Asks Man Utd board to Replace Solskjaer with Zidane

According to El Chiringuito, Cristiano Ronaldo has advised Manchester United’s board to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Zinedine Zidane.

Following a 4-2 loss to Leicester City on Saturday, Solskjaer has been under greater scrutiny.

The Red Devils have lost three matches in the Premier League.

United’s leadership is said to have given Solskjaer their full support, believing the 48-year-old would enhance the team’s performance.

Senior officials at Old Trafford, on the other hand, are weighing their alternatives and have identified him as a viable contender, based on Ronaldo’s proposal.

According to the report, Zidane has met with United’s management, but he is interested in succeeding Didier Deschamps as France’s new head coach.

It’s also been reported that Zidane was approached by both PSG and Newcastle United, but the former Real Madrid manager declined both offers.
