TSMC builds advanced chip factory in southern Taiwan

This activity coincides with TSMC ‘s plan to expand production globally to solve the problem of semiconductor supply.

According to Nikkei, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is moving to build an advanced factory in southern Taiwan, as part of a $100 billion expansion plan to address an unprecedented chip shortage across the country. Global. Construction of the new facility will begin as soon as 2022. People familiar with the matter said the new chip factory is expected to be located in Kaohsiung city. This is the first time TSMC has been present in the industrial port city. One of TSMC’s key chemical suppliers, Entegris, is also making its largest-ever capital investment in the city.

The above construction plan comes as the Taiwanese government ramps up efforts to maintain more of TSMC’s chip production capacity in the country. Securing a competitive semiconductor industry is not only important to Taiwan’s economic growth but also has strategic and security implications.

According to informed sources, the new plant will produce chips using technology advanced 7 nm and 6 nm, which is used to manufacture microprocessors advanced mobile processor and computing, graphics for Nvidia, AMD, and MediaTek. Currently, the most advanced chip manufacturing technology in the industry is 5-nanometer technology, which is used to make mobile processors for Apple’s iPhone 12 and the upcoming iPhone 13.

The contract chipmaker also recently received final regulatory approval to build its most advanced chip factory in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. In addition, TSMC is finalizing discussions for the first chip factory in Japan.

TSMC had a plan to bring 7 nm manufacturing technology to Nanjing, China, to address the growing local demand. However, escalating geopolitical uncertainty has caused TSMC to rethink its plans for China, instead of announcing it will spend $2.8 billion to expand the production of mature technology in the country. This is for more widely used chips.

TSMC did not directly comment on new domestic factory plans but told Nikkei that it considers Taiwan its main expansion hub.

“The Taiwanese government doesn’t want TSMC to go anywhere,”

said Arisa Liu, a semiconductor analyst with the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research.

TSMC’s investment this year accounted for 20% of Taiwan’s total private investment. It is vital to the island’s economic growth, taxes, and the entire local ecosystem, as well as high-paying jobs. Not to mention the chip industry currently has a great impact on national security and could become an important bargaining chip for Taiwan to have better international negotiations. At the same time, it will also make Taiwan safer because no one in the world wants to “build important factories where there may be interruptions”.

Cities in Taiwan also pay a lot of attention to the issue of attracting chip investment, as it offers an opportunity to develop the local economy and increase real estate prices.

“The massive investment in chips around key science parks across Taiwan has become a guarantee for property price appreciation. The overall housing price increase is about 10% from last year to this year, but the average price increase can be up to 20% if it is around the science park and TSMC investment site,”

said Chen Jie-ming, Research director of housing consulting firm UBHouse, said.
