US submarines collides in the East Sea: the most unpredictable seabed in the world

Analysts say the changing topography of the seabed as well as the noise of ships make the South China Sea a dangerous place for submarines.

CNN on October 8, quoted analysts as saying that the area of the South China Sea where a US submarine has just crashed is also one of the most difficult submarine waters in the world.

Two US defense officials previously said the US nuclear-powered submarine USS Connecticut rammed an underwater object in the South China Sea on October 2.

Officials said 11 sailors aboard the USS Connecticut were injured, of which about nine suffered minor injuries. These sailors were all treated on the submarine. According to a statement from the Pacific Fleet, no soldiers suffered life-threatening injuries.

US officials did not give details of the accident, but said they would investigate and fully evaluate the incident. USS Connecticut is one of three Seawolf-class submarines of the US Navy with a price of about 3 billion USD each. The ship with a displacement of 9,300 tons was commissioned in 1998 with a crew of about 140 people.

Although it has been more than 20 years, the ship has been upgraded with many modern technologies and is extremely quiet, fast, equipped with modern sensors, with the ability to carry the most weapons compared to other attack submarines of Vietnam. US, including 50 torpedoes as well as Tomahawk cruise missiles .

While the US Navy did not disclose what damaged the submarine, observers believe the South China Sea is a difficult environment for the submarine’s advanced sensor systems.

“It could be a small object that makes the sensors undetectable in a noisy environment,”

said Alessio Patalano, professor of war and strategy at King’s College London (UK).

Navy ships utilize passive sonar equipment to identify things in the water near ships, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Unlike active sonars that send signals and measure the reflections back to the ship, passive sonar only detects sound directed towards the ship.

This allows the submarines to be quiet and hidden from the enemy, but also means they have to rely on other equipment, or use a lot of passive sonar to identify objects in the way.

Because the South China Sea is one of the busiest commerce channels and fishing areas on the planet, any noise from ships on the sea might prevent submarines from identifying possible threats below.

“Depending on where the problem is, the intervening sound can affect the sensors,”

said Patalano.

According to Carl Schuster, a former US Navy officer, not only ships have the ability to influence submarines in the South China Sea.

“It was a very bad environment for hearing. Inter-island currents and unstable water conditions can affect sound reception,

he said.

Besides, he thinks it is possible that the ship is affected by what is below:

“The water and seabed environment there changes slowly but always. It is an area where regular seabed mapping is required. You can hit a mountain that has never been recorded down there.”

According to Schuster, that is also the reason why the US and China regularly patrol and survey in the South China Sea.

In April, an Indonesian submarine sank in the Bali Strait, killing 53 sailors. Indonesian Navy officials said the accident was caused by “natural/environmental factors,” but did not elaborate.

Senior officials at Old Trafford, on the other hand, are weighing their alternatives and have identified him as a viable contender, based on Ronaldo’s proposal.

According to the report, Zidane has met with United’s management, but he is interested in succeeding Didier Deschamps as France’s new head coach.

It’s also been reported that Zidane was approached by both PSG and Newcastle United, but the former Real Madrid manager declined both offers.
